A busy build this week — several fixes at once, and the headline you've been waiting for since Update 10: the USB problem is solved. We've also sent a new PCB and a fresh round of cases off to be made.
Stabilising the USB
In Update 10 we admitted USB wasn't working. The fix came down to distance: we moved the controller right next to the USB-C port. With less board for the signal to cross, the communication is far more stable. On a wired-only device the USB link is everything, so getting this solid was the priority — and now it is.
Moving the display connector to the top
We relocated the display's connector to the top of the board. It looks like a small change, but it noticeably cuts the cost of assembling the PCB — fewer awkward steps, a cleaner layout. Durable and affordable, with nothing wasted, is exactly what we're after.
A boost for the display
We added a small DC/DC boost converter that steps +5V up to +12V, acting as a charge pump to drive the screen. The display wants a higher voltage than the rest of the board runs at, and this gives it a clean, steady supply.
Testing the button feel
We also tried a push button with a 250 N actuation force. Pressing it, the verdict was quick: a little too stiff. On a device you use to confirm every transaction, the buttons should feel sure and deliberate — but not a fight for your thumb. So we'll dial the force back to something that clicks with confidence without feeling stubborn.
New PCB and cases on order
With those changes locked in, we've ordered a new PCB and another round of cases. This time we're trying three different housing materials — resin, plus two kinds of nylon — so we can feel each one in the hand and see which looks and wears best. We'll show you the moment they land.
